One simple truth that’s been showing up across 100+ strategy days, workshops and planning sessions with dozens of teams over this last year:
The companies making the biggest strides aren’t just well-run.
They’re well-told.
And that doesn’t mean loud.
It doesn’t mean flashy.
In collaborating with growing and scaling companies—from construction and finance to nonprofits and minor league sports, we see the highest-performing teams recognize their story as a leadership tool and a marketing message.
When your internal and external messaging aligns with your why and that deep Core Focus, it becomes easier to:
- Attract the right clients.
- Rally your team around a shared mission.
- Execute faster with clarity and conviction.

Your story is the through-line that connects your values, marketing strategy, sales language and leadership voice.
That’s the power of a sharp, intentional business story.
If your story hasn’t kept up with your growth, here’s where to start:
1 – Audit Your Messaging
Check to see if your message reflects your core values and long-term vision at every touchpoint:
- Are your goals aligned with marketing?
- Are there different tones in team meetings?
- And another experience entirely for customers?
2 – Make Your Client the Hero
Too many businesses unintentionally make themselves the main character, but the best stories center on the client’s journey.
You’re the guide.
They’re the one with the challenge and the transformation ahead.
You might start by:
- Highlighting client outcomes instead of just services.
- Rewriting your homepage with “you” instead of “we.”
- Training your sales team to frame offers around results, not features.
It may seem subtle, but this shift builds customer trust and employee engagement.
3 – Say It Out Loud
One of my favorite moments in a planning session is when a leader pauses and says:
“That’s not really us. That doesn’t feel true anymore.”
That’s a turning point.
Because businesses evolve. And your story should evolve with it.
A quick leadership exercise: Say your core story out loud to your team and ask:
- Does this still feel like us?
- Would I be proud to share this with a future buyer?
- Would I bet the next 3 to 5 years on this message?
If the answer isn’t a full-body yes, it’s time to reshape your narrative.
Your Story Isn’t Fluff
It’s a strategic asset and leadership discipline that drives growth, alignment and ultimately, a wealthy, strategic exit.
