Business owners and leaders love efficiency.

Cutting waste, keeping margins tight and maximizing output are noble goals.

But there’s a hidden danger in taking lean too far.

You can actually choke off your own growth.

I see this play out often in my coaching, and one story still sticks with me.

The Owner Who Wouldn’t Reinvest

A blue-collar contracting business I worked with had about eight employees and a great team.

The owner was smart, gritty and ambitious.

But he was buried.

Instead of focusing on business development, hiring laborers and expanding his footprint, he was stuck in the weeds, doing everything from running the company’s social media to invoicing and writing quotes.

He was so busy working in the business that he couldn’t work on the business.

The solution was clear from day one in working with them.

They needed to bring in an office manager.

Someone who could free up his time, keep operations humming and allow him to focus on the growth he dreamed about.

But he refused.

His objection was simple… “I can’t afford it.”

My response was even simpler: If you ever want to grow, you can’t afford not to.

By trying to run his business too lean, he created his own bottleneck.

Quotes went out late.

Opportunities slipped through his fingers.

Growth stalled.

Instead of building momentum, he was trapped in status quo, with no path forward.

Eventually, I had to make a tough call as his coach.

At The Greenhouse, we work with clients who are more afraid of staying stuck than they are of change.

If an owner isn’t willing to invest in growth, even when the ROI is staring them in the face, they won’t get where they want to go.

So we parted ways.

And it was heartbreaking, because he had a great team and a big dream.

But his refusal to let go and invest in the right people kept that dream from ever taking flight.

Here’s the truth: you as an owner and leader are either your company’s greatest accelerant or its biggest bottleneck.

When you cling too tightly to tasks that others could handle, you’re not saving money.

You’re costing yourself opportunities, freedom and growth.

If you want to scale, build value and eventually step back, you have to make the leap.

You have to invest in people and trust them to carry the load.

Otherwise, you’ll stay stuck in the weeds, watching the dream you built slowly stall out.

Lean is good.

Too lean will kill your growth.
