You’re navigating the daily demands of running a business—while also wondering how to grow, scale or eventually exit in a way that doesn’t burn you out or leave money on the table.
You’re not alone—and you’re asking the right questions.
In fact, these are six of the most pressing questions we hear from owners and entrepreneurs just like you.
Questions about how to break through growth ceilings, build real value (not just revenue) and exit on your own terms.
I recently had the chance to share our answers in Prairie Business Magazine, and I want to share them with you.
If you’re serious about leveling up your business and future-proofing your success, start here.
6 MOST PRESSING QUESTIONS
Q: What are the most common obstacles you see in businesses when trying to scale?
A: Many businesses hit a ceiling because they lack clarity in their vision and don’t have the correct foundational structure and/or people to execute at a high level.
Without unified direction and strong leaders, it’s challenging to implement processes that drive growth.
That’s where proven systems like EOS® that we implement with many companies come into play, helping organizations align their vision, gain traction and foster healthy team dynamics.
Q: How can business owners build value beyond just increasing revenue?
A: Building value is about creating a business that’s not only profitable but also transferable.
Most companies mistakenly just target profitability and revenue, rather than overall enterprise value.
Also, many owners vastly overestimate the value of their companies, when in reality, 70-80% of businesses that go to market never actually sell.
This is typically the result of multiple value drivers being weak and there just isn’t enough blue sky, especially once the business-dependent owner is out of the picture.
Our Value Builder System™ focuses on your eight key value drivers that enhance your company’s value, such as financial performance, growth potential and customer satisfaction. Want to see where your company scores? Get your free Value Builder report here.
When owners strengthen these areas, businesses become more attractive to potential buyers and investors.
Q: When should a business start planning for an exit or succession?
A: Unfortunately, we see too many owners leave 6 to 7-figures on the table because of late planning.
Ideally, exit planning should begin years before the actual transition, as this allows an owner time to implement strategies that maximize value, limit tax liability and ensure a smooth handover, whether that’s selling to a third party, passing the business to family members or setting up an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
Early planning allows an owner to best align their personal and financial goals with the business’s future.
Not to mention, it de-risks the business if something catastrophic were to happen prior to a planned exit.
Exit planning is just good business strategy.
Q: What are some key components of a successful exit strategy?
A: We take owners through what is known as Value Acceleration Methodology™, which is a comprehensive exit strategy involving three phases: Discover, Prepare and Decide.
In the Discover phase, owners identify where the business is currently at, their goals and what they want from the exit.
The Prepare phase focuses on enhancing the business’s value and readiness for transition.
Finally, in the Decide phase, owners choose the best exit option that aligns with their objectives.
Throughout this process, it’s crucial to consider factors like tax implications, succession planning and personal readiness.
